PROGRESS IS A SPIRAL UPWARD - 2017

Historic 401 Richmond Building — Tangled Art Gallery
Solo Exhibition | 65 Original Works

Progress Is a Spiral Upward brought together sixty-five pieces completed across years, mediums, and continents—including drawings, paintings, and kinetic land-based sculptures—to demonstrate the breadth of Sab’s interdisciplinary practice. Utilizing materials such as hand-chiselled stone, ancient cedar chips, coral, mica, and spices, gathered during travels and residencies, the exhibition highlighted Sab’s longstanding interest in how natural substances shape and activate space. It stands as a key example of Sab’s ability to integrate technique, material intelligence, and conceptual clarity within a single body of work

From the Gallery:
Progress is a Spiral Upward, a visual arts exhibit by sab meynert [Toronto], presents vivid drawings and sculptural pieces. Utilizing organic repetitive patterning, meynert interweaves poetic imagery and text to reveal graphic maps of visceral emotions reflecting the multiformity of life’s infinitely unfolding nature.”

From the Artist:
“This exhibition marked a turning point wherein foundational works on paper were reflected in earthen form through sculptures made with found materials and cultural skills gathered during travels earlier that year—honouring my homeland in Ontario, my motherland in Jaffna and Sri Lanka, and a life-altering three-week residency in Sitka, Alaska, under the collaboration of Tlingit/Unangax̂ artist Nicholas Galanin. I debuted my somatic sculptural works as well as a community-collaborative stone-bowl installation, articulating my intention to hold and activate liminal space as an artist of colour with Indigenous ancestry within institutional contexts I was born into but not fully embraced by. I wanted to make clear that in being known as a prolific artist working within margins, above all, the motivation to make work, to take up space, and to offer it for communion, is love - and that love is the medium for our progress upward.”
